Minnesota DNR Fish and Wildlife advisory committee invites public participation

Minnesotans have an important upcoming opportunity to engage with the Fish and Wildlife Advisory Committee, a group established in state law to make recommendations to the legislature and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources regarding hunting, fishing, habitat management, and related issues.

The committee will hold an online public meeting at 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec 2,  and all Minnesotans are invited to attend. The committee will discuss its prior work, and input from the meeting will help inform the group’s focus for the coming year. A link to the meeting is available on the Fish and Wildlife Advisory Committee webpage.

“We invite anyone who is interested in fish and wildlife season setting, research, population or habitat management to attend this meeting and let the committee know about topics that are important to you,” said Jason Ko, policy and planning supervisor.

The meeting agenda will include an overview of the committee, a presentation of the committee’s 2026 annual report and recommendations, discussion and comment time, and a solicitation of 2027 topic ideas.

The 15-member committee comprises Minnesotans who have a passion for fish and wildlife habitat conservation, stewardship and restoration. Each year, the committee chooses focus topics and alternates between budget and policy topics each year. Policy will be the focus in 2027.

Over the course of the year, the committee reviews data, consults with subject matter experts and the public, and interviews DNR staff about the selected topics. The committee submits a report to the Minnesota Legislature by Sept. 15 of each year that includes recommendations to both the legislature and the DNR.

“At the DNR, we greatly value the insight we gain from individual Minnesotans, stakeholder groups, and the Fish and Wildlife Advisory Committee,” Ko said. “This meeting in December is a great opportunity for the public to share their priorities and ideas directly with the committee members to help inform for the committee’s 2027 focus.”

Current committee members are listed on the Fish and Wildlife Advisory Committee members webpage. Detailed information including requirements for appointees, committee responsibilities, past committee reports, and past Game and Fish Fund reports, can be found on the Fish and Wildlife Advisory Committee webpage.
